With the book Per una espressione nuova / Towards New Expression (1974) published with Rivolta Femminile, Suzanne Santoro aims to highlight and denounce the iconographic erasure of the female sex. Through a series of black and white images, she expresses a critical stance towards the “subordinated and unclarified” representation of female genitalia from the art of the classical period to the present day. The censorship of the book by the Institute of Contemporary Art in London had an international resonance.
