From March 19 to June 26, 2022 the Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste presents the exhibition Io, lei, l’altra – Portraits and photographic self-portraits of women artists, curated by Guido Comis in collaboration with Simona Cossu and Alessandra Paulitti. Produced and organised by ERPAC – Ente Regionale per il Patrimonio Culturale del Friuli Venezia Giulia – the exhibition traces, through ninety works, the photography of the last hundred years and allows us to evaluate the new conception of women and their role through a succession of extraordinary images from Wanda Wulz to Cindy Sherman, from Florence Henri to Nan Goldin.
Portraits and photographic self-portraits are an extraordinary testimony to the difficult process of self-assertion and the conquest of a new social identity by women artists in the 20th century and the early years of the new century. Portraits and self-portraits are places of confrontation, but also of conflict between different expressions of identity. Conventional forms of representation are contrasted with new ways of expressing one’s personality; the consolidated roles of the representation of women, the repetitive poses borrowed from traditional portraits give way to new modes of expression.
CDP lent 8 works: 2 by Anna Di Prospero, Central Park and Self-Portrait with the mother, 2 portraits by Elisabetta Catalano, Titina Maselli and Giosetta Fioroni, and 4 works by Nicole Gravier from the series Mythes et Clichées.
